HOW TO BECOME A COMMISSIONER
Pursuant to the City’s Code, each City Councilmember may appoint one Commissioner to each of the City’s four Commissions (i.e., Planning and Preservation Commission; Parks, Wellness and Recreation Commission, Transportation and Public Safety Commission; and Education Commission), with the appointment approved by the full City Council.
For appointment consideration, interested residents must submit an application. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter, and reside within the City of San Fernando. It is encouraged that applicants be involved or employed in the applicable Commission’s field or related subject. Commissioners receive a monthly meeting attendance stipend of $100.
The San Fernando City Council is now accepting applications for appointment to three Commissions:
- San Fernando Planning and Preservation (P&P) Commission: Meets on the second Monday of each month, beginning at 6:30 pm, at the City Hall Council Chambers, located at 117 Macneil St. – Applications accepted until filled.
- San Fernando Parks, Wellness, and Recreation (PWR) Commission: Meets on the second Thursday of each month, beginning at 6:30 pm, at the City Hall Council Chambers, located at 117 Macneil St. – Applications accepted until filled.
Each appointment is to fill one (1) unscheduled vacancy for the term of office from the date of appointment through December 2023. Members shall continue in the position beyond one year until replaced by the appointing City Councilmember or until the member resigns.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter and reside within the City jurisdiction. It is encouraged that applicants be involved or employed in the field of Planning and Preservation (P&P Commission), Transportation and Public Safety (T&PS Commission), or Parks, Wellness, and Recreation (PWR Commission) and culture or related subjects. Commissioners receive a monthly meeting attendance stipend of $100.00.
Each Commission consists of five Commission members. During the Commissions annual reorganization, Commissioners must choose one of its members to serve as Chair and another member to serve as Vice Chair; and the terms of office shall be for one year or until successors chosen.

DISASTER COUNCIL
- Assists the City Council with planning related to city emergency, hazard mitigation and mutual aid plans and agreements.
- Meets quarterly in the City Hall Community Room located at 117 Macneil Street, San Fernando; meeting dates vary.Effective July 2021, Commissions have resumed meeting in person in the Council Chambers (117 Macneil Street, San Fernando). - Assists the City Council with the long-range growth and development of the city through the review and recommendations to the City Council on general and specific plans approval, urban forestry programs and city’s tree master plan development, proposed subdivisions, zone code amendments and the commission’s review and approval of a variety of discretionary development proposals.

SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY BOARD
- Assists the City Council on identifying the needs of resident seniors and advocating and making recommendation on ways to meet their needs.
- Meets the fourth Thursday of each month (except November and December) at 1 pm in the Las Palmas Park Arts & Crafts Room located at 505 South Huntington Street, San Fernando.

TRANSPORTATION & PUBLIC SAFETY COMMISSION
- Assists the City Council with identifying and recommending ways and means to improve traffic safety conditions and enforce city transportation regulations.
- Beginning September 2021, meets the first Wednesday at 6 pm in the Council Chambers located at 117 Macneil Street, San Fernando.
- On April 18, 2022, the City Council adopted Ordinance No. 1709 to rename the Transportation and Safety Commission to the Transportation and Public Safety Commission and expanded the duties of the Commission to include Public Safety.Effective July 2021, Commissions have resumed meeting in person in the Council Chambers (117 Macneil Street, San Fernando). - Assists the City Council with the oversight of the city’s urban forestry program and makes recommendations on goals and policies to protect and enhance local tree resources.
